Beechdale Road, Roland Park MD, Finished Project, Dry Laid Construction



Dry laid construction, Butler stone with a mix of PA Blue stone along with local stone from the old wall. Left side retaining wall 3'.5" corner length with a 19'.5" length back to driveway. 8 PA Blue step stones built into both walls. Free standing wall 11' with vertical cheek end. All walls built with a 1:6 Batter. Average height of the walls are 3'. Two tie stones 3' in from corner before steps. Walling style corse with random jumpers. Project time 34 days


The original mortared wall/7 steps were replace with the same design but modified to be much more practical to the space. This old wall was damaged when a 100 year old Beech tree fell over lifting the wall/steps right up. 


After weed wacking my work area you can now really see the old wall. The steps were built with mortar the old retain wall was built dry. Which was great since a gas line was directly under the structure. Had this been build wet I would have been a little concerned using any gas or power tools to remove such a wall. 


Most of the wall shown in this photo would be covered later with screened fill dirt. You can really see the over all size along with much of the all which will soon be hidden. Cap stones can be best seen in this photo with the angle going up hill to hit top step. My thinking was being a driveway if snow plowed snow would only be push over and down the steps. Since the last cap stones hit the middle of the top step. No Snow being plowed or the plow would catch them. The only possibility would be the top step being moved. 


Before photo from back yard. You can really see how the force of a 100 year old beech tree just up rooted these mortared wall/steps. 


14" + Flat caps on corner to steps. One flat cap on wall head / Cheek end.


8 PA Blue stone steps feather and wedged. Bottom step #1 being 3' wide with the driveway step # 8 being 4' wide but really making a full landing with the stone total length of 80" seen below. Steps have 6" rise (height) with a 14" tread = very comfortable to walk up or down. The steps extend 112" out. 


This photo looking down the steps really shows the left cap stones. The freestanding wall cap stones are 15". You will also noticed in the photo the rain gutter behind the retaining wall. After heavy rain fall I realized that the car port did not have one. Not something I had noticed before. Installing one on the structure would have cost big B$$$k's with the slate roof and no facing to install one. So I figure why not. This was a home owner bonus why because I can. Plus I really felt this one little thing would be a game changer long term with the longevity of the wall. Helping to remove water away from a wall is always a good thing. This part of the project was inspired by the local street drains. Blog: Calade - Dry Laid Road Gutters. Behind the rain gutter (to right) you will notice a PA Blue stone step 5' long by 20" wide. The home owner wanted something other the dirt to step on when they opened there door. The large the stone less chance for weeds to grow under their feet.


With the drain I was sure to have one large stone over hang past the wall in order direct the water out past the wall.


Screened fill dirt, grass seed and straw put down. Most of the new wall now hidden. You can also see the benefit of having a large flat step which matches the driveway when the car door opens. The client can step out onto something safe. 


Full wall. I replanted to hostas from the property to help add a little color and height back to the space. In time grass will be sprouting up. The green grass will really make the brown stones pop.

A great view from the backyard. I believe each dry laid construction I design and build should fit the space. Otherwise I'm not doing justice to the stone's, myself and the client. This home was built a 100 years ago with craftsmen who took pride in there trade.

Tool - Wagon, 1200 pound rated


The current job I'm now on had some logistical challenges. The biggest issue were to storage material on the job site (stone has to be hauled in one dump truck load at time) the second the moving of the material for this 70' long wall. I had never owned a wagon like this but I figured the foot print it would leave on the landscape would be one of the smallest. I own a wheel barrow but I've never used it for walling. 

  
You can find these just about any were. I picked up mine from my local Tractor Supply Store for about $110. With an investment like this I had nothing to lose if it can help save my back and a little more time. What I like about this wagon over a wheel barrow. I can see all my stones very well and work right off the platform. I can even put down one or all the walls making it even easier to grab stones. This wagon has a great turning radius and will not fall over if you make to tight of a turn since it has a wide wheel base. 


This wagon had a rating of 1200 pounds. The first thing I did was to cut some plywood to protect the bed made out of steel mesh. Ya that would not have lasted to long with some rip rap stones. Now I can just throw them in. Well kind of......

So far I've moved over 12,000 pounds of stone - I'd say this was well worth the investment. Really not to bad to pull around either.

What I love about Mortar-My Jack Hammer!

Mortar has so many benefits. With mortar you can build amazing structures you just can't with dry laid stone. You can also use less stone with typically less labor involved. When I graduated from high school my parents took me and my sister to France. (still looking for some photos to add to this blog) I saw some of the most amazing stone castles and structures. While I believe everything has a place this is not one of the benefits of Mortar - MY JACK HAMMER...


Once stone has mortar it's no longer a stone but a part of a group. I would guess 90% of mortared construction will be disposed of in a land fill. This can not be said about a dry laid stone construction. If a wall fails you just pick up all the pieces and reuse them. You can add to a structure, remove a structure, recycle structure, in the world of green - dry laid stone is at the top of the list for environmentally friendly building practice.


This wall failed because of hydraulic pressure. All but one small pallet of stone could be saved for reuse. The rest was dumped on site. What a waste of good rocks.

This wall failed because a large 100 year old Birch tree up rooted in a storm pulling up the steps with it. Most of this mortared wall after jack hammering was re-used as packing in he rebuild of the new wall. 


Just another waste of good stone when failure occurs. You'll notice in this picture above the contractor buckets are sitting on a dry laid stone wall. This was great since I could just take everything apart to use the stone. What you can't see is the yellow flags unless you click on the photo. The Yellow flags are markings for a GAS LINE!  Do you think a mortared footer could be placed over top of this? Maybe / Maybe not. All up to the utility company or local laws. At least with the dry laid stone you can remove it as needed if any repairs need to be done. WITH OUT ANY POWER TOOLS. Yup gas line - jack hammer, power tools....etc.... would not be fun with a mortared wall. Just not a pretty picture  if something goes wrong!!!

Remember before you dig call Miss Utility 811. Its the law. (not all states offer this service - check with you local guidelines)

How To - PA Blue Stone Steps - Beechdale Rd, Roland Park MD


Beechdale Project includes 8 PA Blue Stone Steps. The bottom steps measures in at 3 ft long with the top step being 4'. The interesting thing with PA Blue stone slabs each stone ranges in sizes these are from 3"-5" as seen with the 4th step up is 5" thick. This build incorporates tying the steps into a freestanding wall on right and retaining wall on left (as seen below) . The steps have a 6" rise with a 14" tread. Making walking up and down them very easy for any one. 


I start with slabs of stones. Then I use feather and wedges to make the slabs into the sizes I need. My goal is to create a min of a 16" tread.

Next I measure out my stone step to determine what I need to build under each one to get me to my goal of 6" rise. Some of the biggest issues with natural stone - one side might be 3" the other 4" and the back side some thing totally different. Making it very challenging some times to get the stone to be level. Most of the time I shoot to have each step drop a little at the front in order for water to run off quicker. Then again your working with natural stone you do the best you can. 


The steps I'm building with I've kept the drill marks since the home has a great deal of stones with them over the window frames. So it gives the look that the steps had been built at the same time period. Visually tying the two together. 



Next I set up my square to make my marks for the next steps. Using a crayon I mark a cross two lines one for 14" and the other for 16". ( placement of the step above)


The 16" mark is where I start to build up my stone under the step to get me to the 6" rise I need. The 14" mark is my over hang of 2" to give a little contrast and negative space under the step. 


Next I'll use a string line or my 8' level to get me to the needed height for my under step build. I find the size stones and build to the string line or level. Taking into consideration of any size differences of the step I'm setting ie. one side being  3" and to other 4".


As seen in this photo I set my first stone at 3" since I'm using a 3" step in order to get my 6" rise. 


Then I build back just like a wall. Compensating as needed in order to make my step level or pitch a little down at the front for water to run off. Building steps for me are like setting tie stones. Once you set the stone you have to make sure all voids under the stone step/tie are filled. ( no wobbles )

Looking down 6 steps. Only 2 to go and I'm at the top of the wall. The top wall is the board that goes across the top by the driveway. ( level )


Whats missing? How do I set each step that weighs 600 pounds...... my brand new/used Komatsu PC 27 Mini Excavator with the Geith Thumb/bucket. Yup this is why I bought this machine just for this kind of work. Four guys = $$$$ or one skid loader with straps = Pain in my butt.  Both could do the same task but not with agility, speed and skill as this machine. 


The biggest challenge with the job has been working over a bank. I was at my furthest reach setting my first step 112" out. I have really had a great time on this project. My only heart break to date was breaking one of my steps when it fell out of the thumb. Sh--t happens! Just had to go get another one to keep me on track. Just stone. Then I was able to pull out the drill, feather and wedges to make that 4th step up. Good times...

Tool - Rubber Hammer - Power Nailer


Recently my rubber hammer gave its two week notice. I was on a quest to find a beloved replacement. The hunt was on. I put ads on craigs list, on the internet, I called all my stone buddies.... ok not really. But funny enough my stone buddy Adam called a week before asking if I had any idea where he could find a heavy rubber hammer I said - no.... not really.

I started a new stone job and was ready to start getting my foundation stones set in place with a little help from my beloved rubber mallet. I realized I was asking to much from this old timer. So I called my stone buddy Adam and ask if he had found a place to get one. He said.... yes he did. He had contacted a local rental place called Sun Belt and said they would have some Power Nailer hammers coming in any day. So I stopped by on my way to my scooter shop and found they just got the shipment in while I was standing asking about them. I checking out the new smaller hammer used for hitting power nailers when installed wood floors.

The Sun Belt sales man said they sell allot of these hammers to hardscape fellows for installing paver blocks. Sad that no other stone supplier had any thing as nice as this. I figured for $47 it was worth a shot. Better then what I had to work with plus I had a job to do. Time is money right?!


Once I got the Power nailer hammer in my hands my #1 concerned was the lack of weight.  As you can see with my last hammer it's a real big boy. Not enough weight behind a hit was quickly put to rest. What I loved was: how easy it was to handly swing in my hand, great grip with the punched out holes in the handle, the bounce back with the rubber (also available with a white rubber head), Made In USA, easy size to carry around in my bucket of tools and the kicker the back side sledge. I had a bunch of stones with mortar on them. I was able to pick this up and use the back side to really do some damage. The angled point directs the energy when busting up stones. I was in love with this new found employee. I offered free room and board in the trailer and free tanning seasons in the sun while basking on the rocks during breaks. What more can a hammer ask for? So if your looking for something to swing around in your hands to help place a few flat stone or walling rocks this is hammer gets 5 stars on the list of great job site tools.  Power Nailer - keep them Rockin'

Not to long after I bought this hammer Bon Tools sent a email out showing off a new hammer they had just come out with. I requested a little more info with a sample to test. But got no response. Guess my email ended up in spam?!
